3rd Annual Wheelin' Sportsmen Pheasant Hunt Huge Success

February 18, 2012

On Saturday, February 18th, the Illinois Wheelin' Sportsmen hosted it's 3rd Annual Wheelin Sportsmen Pheasant Hunt at Lick Creek Game Preserve in Pekin, IL.  This year 5 lucky Illinois Wheelin' Sportsmen members were paired with volunteers from the Pekin River Bottoms Gobbler NWTF Chapter for a day of pheasant hunting, trap shooting and sampling Mr. Yergler's famous pheasant gravy with noodles and garlic toast!  The meal is always a highlight of the day and hits the spot after a long day afield.  The hunters were provided an ATV to either drive themselves, or ride on while in the field to manuever through the standing milo fields and prairie grass strips.  The Wheelin' Sportsmen partnered with the Spoon River Chapter of the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVDHA) to make this day complete.  The NAVHDA chapter brought professional handlers and world class pointing dogs to ensure our hunters had the best shot at success possible.  Thank you to everyone that helped make this special event a huge success!  We look forward to seeing you all back out at Lick Creek next year!

Strut and Rutâ Alfalfa Attractant Mix comes pre-inoculated and a 12-pound bag will cover approx. 1 acre. It provides areas of food and cover through the winter and provides excellent nesting and brood-rearing cover during spring and early summer. It is heavily utilized by wild turkeys, deer and other wildlife.  Broadcast over one acre from May into late June and in fall through September. Cover seed ¼” deep using a drag or culti-packer to insure good soil to seed contact. Soil pH should be 5.5 – 7.0. oil tested, fertilize with 5-10-15 at a rate of 250 pounds per acre and a minimum of 2,000 pounds of lime per acre.

Strut and Rut Triple Threat Clover Mix is a concentrated, pre-inoculated clover mix including Crimson, Patriot and Durana clovers. This mix will provide high quality food and cover for wild turkeys, deer and other wildlife. This mix is adapted to most sites and will stay established for several years with proper maintenance. Prepare the seedbed by disking or harrowing the ground. Create a smooth seedbed. Follow the recommendations on amounts of lime and fertilizer. Broadcast seed over one acre. Cover seed ¼” deep using a drag or cultipacker to insure good seed to soil contact. Soil pH should be 6.0 to 7.0.  Normally can be planted early fall or early spring depending on location.

Super Sorghum Strut & Rut® Mixshould be planted into well-tilled soil with either a wheat drill or broadcast. Plant about 1 ½ inches deep or at least into the moisture. If drilled, the 15 lbs. will cover two acres or one acre if broadcast. If seed is broadcast, then lightly disk or cultipack after broadcasting. A variety of sorghums in the mix is designed specifically to provide a high energy food supply through an extended period and also to minimize deer damage. This blend is normally planted a couple weeks later than corn and is adapted to a variety of soil types.

Buckwheat is a very popular feed crop for wildlife, as well as an excellent cover crop. It does well in almost any soil and produces heavy seed crop that shatter easily making them readily accessible to turkeys, ducks, quail and other wildlife. Plant after the danger of frost and at the rate of 40-50 lbs. per acre. A weed-free, smooth, well-prepared seedbed should be established before the crop is seeded. Seed should be placed into moist soil to ensure quick germination (can mature in 10 to 12 weeks with good weather). Do not seed more than 2 inches deep. Fertilize with 5-10-10.

Every bag purchased results in an acre of quality wild turkey brood habitat being established. This helps the IL State Chapter address a key issue identified in our state strategy of the North American Wild Turkey Management Plan. Your membership and financial support at our banquets helps make this program possible and allows the chapter to address high priority habitat needs in our state. THANK YOU!

Sincerely,

Mike Lowder

Adams County Sharp Spurs Participate in Annual Turkey Hunters Care Event

Dr. Robert Reich and his wife Anne lead a group of volunteers from the Adams County Sharp Spurs NWTF Chapter to participate in the Salvation Army Christmas Basket program.  Representing the Turkey Hunters Care initiative and working in cooperation with the local Quincy Rotary Club, the volunteers handed out 625 turkeys for the holidays to local families in need.  This is the 8th annual event for the Adams County Sharp Spurs and their generosity is felt throughout their community.  Dr. Reich states, "Any community could participate in this event.  Virtually every community has a Rotary Club and/or an NWTF chapter and a Salvation Army group that distributes the turkeys.  This should be a model program: a local grocery chain furnishes the refrigerated truck for distribution and the Salvation Army distributes them."  The Turkey Hunters Care is certainly an oustanding program that has had a positive impact on communities across the country.
