Making Tracks

The National Wild Turkey Federation has helped its wildlife agency partners move more than 173,000 wild turkeys to areas of suitable habitat in North America. And with help from corporate partners, the NWTF has donated more than 120,000 wild turkey transport boxes in support of this effort.

Making Tracks is the cooperative program between the NWTF and state, federal, and provincial wildlife agencies to restore wild turkeys to all suitable habitat in North America. The NWTF works with the wildlife agencies, coordinating the trap and transfer of wild turkeys. Wild turkey populations have grown 55 percent since 1990.

The NWTF has coordinated the relocation of 5,500 birds during the 2002 trap and transfer season. This project is supported by NWTF Wild Turkey Super Fund dollars and corporate partners. That's conservation at its best, because not only does wild turkey transfer help build local populations of birds, but it also creates hunting opportunities that provide a big boost to local economies.

Today, every state except Alaska offers spring wild turkey hunting. Currently, more than 2.6 million Americans hunt wild turkeys and pump more than a billion dollars into the economy - many of those dollars help keep small, rural businesses afloat. Now that's just the money generated by hunting in the spring - did you know that forty states also offer fall hunting?
