 Galena, ILJoDaviess Co. Longbeards Host 11th Annual JAKES Day

 

On August 29, the JoDaviess County Longbeards chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation hosted the 11th annual JAKES Day at the Kyle and Karen Marsden farm near Galena, IL.   60 youths and 40 adults enjoyed a pleasant day as they participated in the various activities available for the kids.  JAKES Day participants learned about gun safety and shot BB guns and shotguns at still targets, learned about handling archery equipment  and shot bows and arrows at 3D targets,  built a bluebird house that they were able to take home with them, and participate in a coloring contest.  A campfire building demonstration was performed by Sid Munford.  All youth participants received a JAKES Day T-shirt and were provided hot dogs, chips, and fruit for lunch.All participants were included in a gun raffle again this year.  Winners of the gun raffles included Mackenzie Muehlhiep who won a 20 gauge shotgun, Logan Volling who won an pellet rifle, and Reed Kluesner who won a BB gun.  A $50 savings bond was also awarded to Nick Wand.The JAKES Day committee would like to extend special thanks to Sid Munford for conducting the campfire starting demonstration.  The committee would also like to thank the following donors for their generous support: Galena State Bank, Hans Wienert/Country Cast, Hartzell’s IGA, Pumba’s Pub & Grub, Culvers, McDonalds, Subway, Happy Joes, Walmart, Kathryn Randecker, Hatfield’s Warren Hardware, Spahn and Rose Lumber of Warren, Smiley’s Pub & Grill, Galena Lumber Co., Hoskin’s Lumber Co., and Gary Ferguson.Lastly, the JAKES Day committee would like to thank Kyle and Karen Marsden for making their farm available for the JAKES Day activities.  They would also like to thank the JoDaviess County Longbeards members for their support.JAKES, which stands for Juniors Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics, and Sportsmanship, is the youth program of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF).Photo 101_2497 – Participants gather at 11th Annual JAKES Day.Photo 101_2504 – Youths assemble Bluebird houses at JAKES Day.Photo 101_2510 – JAKES Day raffle winners include (from L to R) McKinzie Muelhiep (20 ga shotgun), Logan Volling (pellet gun), and Reed Kluesner (BB gun).
